Stage 2 Lung Cancer and Treatment

Stage 2 lung cancer occurs when the tumor size ranges from 5–7 cm, has spread to lymph nodes within the lung, or is causing blockage in the bronchus.

Symptoms of Stage 2 Lung Cancer

Most patients do not have noticeable symptoms. However, due to the tumor blocking the airway, symptoms such as cough, bloody sputum, recurring pneumonia, or other respiratory infections may occur. Additionally, unrelated symptoms such as fatigue, pain in certain areas of the body, or swelling in the legs may also be observed.

Diagnosis

In patients over the age of 50 with a history of smoking, various complaints should raise suspicion of lung cancer. Standard chest X-rays do not provide sufficient information. Therefore, low-dose CT scans for screening are recommended. If a suspicious lesion is detected, further tests (such as PET-CT, bronchoscopy, or needle biopsy) should be performed.

Treatment for Stage 2 Lung Cancer

For non-small cell lung cancers in stage 2, the treatment method involves surgical removal of the cancerous lobe.

  • The preferred method is closed-endoscopic surgery (VATS).
  • After surgery, most patients will also require chemotherapy.
  • Radiation therapy (radiotherapy) is rarely needed.
  • Patients are typically discharged after 4 or 5 days in the hospital.
  • They can resume all activities within 2 weeks after surgery.
  • The post-surgery treatment plan is determined by a tumor board based on pathology results and the patient’s other characteristics.
  • For small cell lung cancer in stage 2, surgery is not performed. The appropriate treatment for this cell type is chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
